I don't know if it's because I've been following the Olympics swim competitions or because my upcoming vacation is fast approaching, but I've been eyeing a lot of dreamy pool pictures... For some reason, there are some major differences in the shapes of US vs. European pools. When we built our own pool, all pool makers we met were trying to sell us a "bean shaped"{or kidney shaped} pool, whereas I was constantly attracted to rectangular shapes... In France, the big trend is toward "couloirs de nage", or swimming "corridors"... the narrower, the better... We ended up with a rectangular pool that suits the natural environment of our yard better {some pictures to come I promise}... Here are a few of my favorite pools {sorry, no bean shapes ;-)}...

  2. oh, long and narrow pools are gorgeous... we couldn't do too long because of the natural slope of our yard, but I agree, the longer, the better! Hope your vacation time is coming on the next season Claudia - when we'll be all back to work! :-)

  5. I love a simple rectangular pool, although I need it to be wide, not just for swimming laps. Ewww to bean shaped pools.

  6. oh, the poor kidney pool is so maligned, when it can also look quite fabulous, in the right setting. I love them both - but do concede that the rectangular ones are better for serious lap swimming. But a generously, curvaceous kidney pool can look utterly glamorous in the perfect spot, especially with organic architecture, I think.

But isn't it so true - there is no right or wrong, just differences of opinion, when it comes to these choices?

    1. Oh, absolutely, no right or wrong... When you decide to build your pool, the only thing that matters is that it is YOUR pool. Kidney pool shape is just not our thing... But it works great if you build a huge pool and want to avoid the "olympics" effect. Bottom line is this: the best pool is the one that suits its natural environment and your personal esthetics...

  7. Lovely choices but I agree love the simple rusticity of the rectangular pool surrounded by nature!
